Who We Are

The John Jay Society is a parliamentary debate society dedicated to the formation of good men and women through the pursuit of political and philosophical truth as a community of friends.

We inherit a century-old tradition of debate from several famed schools, including our own, which has possessed older iterations of this society. We are named after our founding father, patriot, diplomat, and Columbia alumnus John Jay. We rigorously engage all points of view through an open exchange of ideas, confronting some of life's hardest questions. As a community of friends, we engage in the pursuit of a true liberal education, one which is truly liberating. Our resolutions, grounded in the first principles of reason and experience, have included topics such as:

Resolved, That There Exists a Tyranny of the Majority
Resolved, That the State Should be a Moral Agent
Resolved, That Humanity is Progressing
Resolved, That Democracy is the Only Means to Secure Liberty
Resolved, That All Inequality is Artificial
Resolved, That Everything has been Thought and Said by Man
Resolved, That Liberal Democracy Secures the Most Happiness for the Most People
