Not everyone comes to Columbia willing to lay bare and deepen their convictions in the face of scrutiny, confront some of life’s hardest questions, or to be among the University’s leading voices. A temperament of intellectual curiosity and honesty is expected. A familiarity with intellectual history is desirable. Members should expect to engage in the faithful pursuit of truth.
There is no political litmus test to join The Society; indeed we boast the widest range of intellectual diversity of any organization at Columbia. In The John Jay Society, it is important to rigorously engage all points of view. The Society has a deep appreciation for the wisdom and legacy of the Western Tradition and the principles of the American founding, which have borne conservatism through the present day.
Importantly, members should carry with them a strong sense of personal integrity, without which the competition of values and ideas loses its potential for virtuous formation.
